POYNTON BOYS ENJOY METROS SUCCESS ...

Stockport Metros LacrosseIn recent years Poynton Lacrosse Club has enjoyed great success in introducing new young players to the game, many of whom have been keen to expand their lacrosse playing horizons by becoming part of Stockport Metros Lacrosse Club.

Established in 1976 by Les Grainger and now organised and run by Chris Livesey, the Metros programme organises bi-annual lacrosse exchange tours to the USA, and arranges hosting in the UK for young players who are part of the Anne Arundel Lacrosse Association of Maryland.

There have been 16 exchange visits since the Metros was founded, and many long-standing friendships have been made by youngsters involved in the programme, which has ‘friendship through lacrosse’ as its motto.

Poynton Lacrosse Club is very proud to have been involved with the Metros programme for many years and for the opportunity it has given to many of our players.

Currently the club has several players involved in the programme at both Under 13 and Under 15 levels, all of whom enjoyed a fabulous trip to the USA in Summer 2008. Poynton players involved in last year’s tour were Josh Robinson, Tom Cooper, George Prescott, Ben Reddy, Jake Howarth, Steve Clayton, Tom Perera and goalkeeper Steven Shaw. This year, Alex Russell has also been selected to join the Metros.

Staying with host families in and around Maryland, the lads played eight games over a 10 day period against various local teams and had a great time. Temperatures were consistently in 90’s (a far cry from the freezing Winter temperatures common at lacrosse matches in the UK!). Competition was tough, but all games were played in great spirit.

As well as the many activities organised by the hosting families, the lads also spent a fantastic day touring the White House in Washington, the Air & Space Museum and the Lacrosse Hall Of Fame. A visit was made to the famous LaxWorld store in Baltimore where lots of the latest lacrosse gear was purchased (baggage allowances on the way home were pushed to their limits!).

A further highlight of the trip for many of the lads was a visit to the prestigious Johns Hopkins University, the home of some of the most successful teams in NCAA lacrosse history. They were hosted at Johns Hopkins by Head Coach, Dave Pietramala who gave the boys a guided tour of the sports facilities at the University. They also met several famous Hopkins players, including Paul Rabel, renowned as one of the finest lacrosse players in the game today.
